Chiyembekeza gets cabinet boot whilst abroad: Beggars cheer Kaliati move
President Peter Mutharika has fired Allan Chiyembekeza whilst he is away on government assignment. Chiyembekeza, former minister of Agriculture is currently outside the country, in Ivory Coast for a government sponsored trip.
Officials from the ministry of Agriculture said the former minister left the country last week.
Mutharika announced a new cabinet on Thursday, making Chiyembekeza the lone casualty.
He has refused to resign despite calls from opposition, civil society and government critics.
Early this year at the height of maize shortage in Admarc depots Chiyembekeza challenged Malawians that even if he was to resign as Minister of Agriculture, “that would not bring maize in the country”.
He is the only university graduate from Bunda college of Agriculture in Cabinet.
During the cabinet assessment by Times Group he scored a miserable 3 alongside George Chaponda who has simply been moved to replace him.
Meanwhile, street beggars in Lilongwe celebrated after Patricia Kaliati was moved from the ministry of Gender and Social Welfare.
Our source said there was spontaneous celebration after the street beggars learnt that Kaliati was heading to ministry of Information.
Kaliati last week told the street beggars off on their demand for government to pay them a monthly social welfare money of K50000 a month.
She also was drumming up enforcement of a law that criminalises giving of alms to street beggars.
Secretary for the ministry of Gender and Social Services Mary Shaba said nothing will change even after Kaliati’s move.
Kaliati has been replaced by Jean Kalirani at the ministry in a cabinet shake up on Thursday.
