Commonwealth hails Muluzi for Nigeria observer mission

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has commended  former Malawian president, Bakili Muluzi, for “ably” leading the Commonwealth Observer Group in Nigeria elections which were won by Muhammadu Buhari defeating president Goodluck Jonathan.

In a letter to Muluzi dated April 1, 2015, Sharma said Muluzi through “exemplary leadership” has shown deep commitments to promote Commonwealth’s fundamental political values.

“Your eminence as an African statesman greatly raised the profile of the group and provided with exceptional access to national and regional leaders,” Sharma noted.

Commonwealth secretary general stated that he was “pleased” that Muluzi’s leadership ensured the group collaborated well with heads of mission of African Union, Ecowas, EU and UN ensuring that messages were “harmonised especially during tense periods.”

He also commended Muluzi and the Commonwealth group for encouraging the political parties to accept results of the elections and contest any dispute not in the streets but peacefully through a due process of the law.

Sharma said Commonwealth “stands ready to support Nigeria in post-election phase.”

Muluzi said the group’s mandate was to observe and consider all aspects of the electoral process to see if the elections were credible and transparent.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja, Muluzi commended Nigerians and major stakeholders in the electoral process for demonstrating patience and maturity during the electoral process.

“Full credit for the peaceful conduct of the elections must go, most of all, to the people of Nigeria.

“The Commonwealth Observer Group would like to commend the members of staff of INEC and polling officials, the security services, domestic and other international observers for the dedication and commitment they displayed.

“We commend the contribution made by the National Youth Service Corps and tertiary students.

“These young men and women showed dedication, creativity and courage in helping to deliver a transparent electoral process,” he said.

He also commended INEC for the introduction of biometric Permanent Voter Cards for the polls.

The ten-member Commonwealth Observer Group was invited to observe Nigeria’s 2015 Presidential and National Assembly elections by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
