Contractor disappoints Immigration Department
All is not well at the Immigration Department with production of passports is low due to the incapacity of the hired Asian contractor.
The department at times produces only 50 passports in a day in all the three regions forcing many passport applicants fail to travel abroad.
“The problem is that the contractor is dictating the system. The contractor is not capable to produce as many passports as required. Despite the incapacity, we hired him and now we are getting the consequences,” said an employee at the department.
The employee said the new system the department adopted is far from being achieved because of the many flaws in it.
“The new system demands a lot and honestly, we are failing to satisfy the requirements. The contractor that was hired cannot do the job. We wonder how he was considered,” said the employee.
Many passport applicants are bitter with the Immigration Department because of the delays to produce passports.
Executive director of Consumer Association of Malawi John Kapito tore the department into pieces in one of the weeklies last week.
Kapito said the department does not know about customer care and that it is inefficient.
He said as consumers body, he has received several complaints about the delays to have passports processed.
But another employee said all is well at the department and blamed many people for desiring to have passports when they are near travelling.
“Many people panic at the last moment and they want a passport there and then. They want us to bypass some of the processes and we cannot do that,” the employee said.
