Crime suspect Tembenu dies in Malawi police custody

A 38 year old crime suspect in Phalombe has died on Tuesday after he suddenly fell ill in a police cell.

Phalombe Police Station publicist Augustin Nkhwazi identified the deceased as Enock Tembenu from Chief Mkumba’s area in the district.

Nkhwazi said Tembenu was arrested along with five others on suspicion of destroying property over chieftaincy wrangles.

“At midnight, the suspect startyed sweating in the police cell and the condition swiftly aggravated and we took him to hospital where he died upon arrival,” said Nkhwazi.

Hospital officials said Tembenu died of severe infection.
