Dausi denies corruption claims against Malawi govt: ‘It is unnecessary aspersions’

Minister of Information, Communication and ICT, Nicholous Dausi has denied claims that there is widespread corruption in government of Peter Mutharika and that Cashgate was born during Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)’s era of the President’s brother Bingu wa Mutharika.

Dausi: Unnecessary aspersions

Critics and the opposition have recently argued the DPP-led government is allowing corruption to thrive and the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) has failed spectacularly in fighting corruption because of political interference.

The government is also being accused of being selective in its prosecution of suspects of corruption, shielding those with links to DPP.

But Dausi, who is also government spokesman, said the accusations are “unnecessary aspersions.”

He said accusing government of being corrupt is “extremely very unfair statement.”

Asked on Daybreak Malawi program aired on Capital Radio recently, that Mutharika administration is accused of being the most corrupt in the country, Dausi said:

“I don’t think that is correct.”

He added: “Let’s not have a carryover sentimental that comes after People’s Party (PP) of Joyce Banda where there was Cashgate—the plunder of public resources at Capital Hill.”

Dausi said: “This government under Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika has tried all it can that we have prevented corruption.”

He said those making allegations of corruption against government should provide objective material evidence to prove their claims.

“Provide substantive, documented evidence beyond reasonable doubt that there is prima facie case [against those you accuse to be corrupt],” Dausi said.

Dausi also  said it is “extremely unfair” for Public Accounts Committee (Pac) of Parliament  chairperson, Alekeni Menyani, to claim that corruption in Malawi government is rampant and there is no political will to fight the vice.

“That is patently false,” said Dausi.

“Menyani is wrong…to make sweeping statement just for political expedience is very dangerous. Let’s move away from anger, vengeful or political posturing,” he said.

Dausi said Menyani remarks as trumpeted what leader of opposition Lazarus Chakwera said recently.

“As MCP person Menyani is towing the line of Chakwera’s statement – full of anger – desperate of power and mere political paranoia,” said Dausi.

Chakwera recently argued that DPP members are busy enriching themselves through corrupt means and are failing to fight corruption because “they themselves are thieves and corrupt”.

Malawi Law Society (MLS) president John Suzi-Banda also observed that Malawi is losing the fight against corruption, saying political will to fight corruption is almost non-existent.

I have said this time and time again that DPP will destroy Malawi and it is happening, they have shared wealth meant to reform civil service and provide Malawians with better facilities from hospitals to road infrastructure, the president is at the forefront defending and awarding corrupt ministers hby posting them to different cabinet positions. What is happening now that Malawi will forever be underdeveloped and poor because we allow these fools and crooks to run government. There is a simple remedy to all this mediocrity, impeach Mutharika and call for fresh elections, he is a failure and shouldn’t enjoy… Read more »

The first step in solving every problem is acknowledging there is a problem. To this day, this DPP government has been denying the presence of corruption despite all signs indicating the contrary. To them corruption only existed during PP era. Is this government going to take this country forward? If they have nothing better to give Malawians the least this government can do is stump out corruption. I wonder if this Minister of information does listen to his boss. Isn’t it a few days ago that APM bemoaned existence of corruption in government? What has changed now to warrant Dausi’s… Read more »

Dausi is deliberately put on that position to paint good image of DPP long serving ministers. Otherwise he doesn’t not deserve the ministerial position.

Truely speaking this man is mocking Malawians. He knows Malawians can not do anything. Malawians will say OH God help US. These people are a group of gangster and there job is to robe Malawi. They are not politicians. Peter is not politician. He did not come to Malawi to help Malawians. Everyone knew that but u refused to listen to mama because she was a woman. Malawians are like Americans Who vote for a man in grounds of someyhing. His brother, professor. They saw him as Amercan. In other countries Peter could not become a leader because He did… Read more »

I think some authority should take away US President-elect Donald Trump’s Tweeter Account and Malawi Minister of Information Nicholas Dausi’s dictionary.
