Dausi says people behind veep fake resignation letter known: ‘Malawi Police will make disclosure’
Minister of Information and Communications Technologies Nicholas Dausi who is also government spokesman has said authorities have the details and names of people behind the fake resignation letter alleged to have been written by Vice President Saulos Chilima.
The letter, which went viral on social media over the weekend, bore what was presumably Chilima’s signature and was addressed to President Peter Mutharika, outlining the reasons why he no longer wants to work as the Vice President.
Dausi said the letter is “fake” and is work of “government detractors.”
“We know them and they will be brought to book,” Dausi claimed on Capital FM Daybreak Malawi program monitored by Nyasa Times on Wednesday.
Ask to name the suspects, Dausi who is a former state spy chief said: “Police will make disclosure. I want to assure Malawians that we know who are behind the fake and ficticious letter.”
He added: “Those who wrote the [fake later] have committed a crime, its wrong , ficticious and immoral.”
The letter with a State seal is dated April 15 , 2017a appears to be expressing dismay over President Peter Mutharika led government’s failure to meet the developmental agenda that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) promised during campaign.
The letter further claims that Chilima is unhappy over a media blackout from the state broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Station (MBC).
“Within the next 12 months I will resign and withdraw my services while transitioning to my successor,” reads part of the letter that has been disowned by Chilima through his press aide Pilirani Phiri.
State House press office said there is no such existence of the letter and advise the public to treat it as bogus.
Garton Kamchezera, a law professor at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima), told the radio that “it is an offence to spread false information.”
He said: “We do have laws that criminalise anything that is false and misleading .”
There have recently been speculations that the relationship between the President and his deputy is strained, allegations which the Malawi leader has dismissed.
Dausi is also dismissed reports of bad blood between Mutharika and Chilima.
When asked on whether the incident would push government to control social media in the country, Dausi said that there is no need to take such a drastic step.

Why does the Vice President not publicly deny that he either wrote or is behind the forgery and the leaking to make known to the President how he really feels?
Mutharika should be demanding that the VP makes a formal statement denying that he has anything to do with the former forgery and supports the President.
In the absence of the VP making the statement let’s take it for granted that the VP even if he did not write the letter agrees with the sentiments expressed by the forger.
Are you sane and sober or you are high? Isn’t the message delivered by VP’s press aide disowning the letter not enough? So what is it that you are ranting about if the contents of the letter are really true? will that make Chilima the author or accessory? Be sober when commenting otherwise just keep ur mouth shut if you don’t have any tangible and credible/sensible thing to say.
