DMI-St. John the Baptist University aids Mangochi flood victims

Staff and students of DMI-St. John the Baptist University, a catholic university runs by the Sisters of Daughters of Mary Immaculate and its collaborators, have reaffirmed their commitment towards alleviating the suffering of flood victims in the country by donating assorted items to flood victims at Changamire camp in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Chimwala in Mangochi  District.

The assorted items include: 100 bags of maize, 10 bags soya pieces, 10 boxes soap of 30 tablets each, 69 plastic buckets and 1 bag of salt valued at MK1.1 Million.

Speaking when making the donation, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. Rajender Dhanuja, said they were greatly concerned with the devastating flood that had left many people homeless and destitute in the district.

“Before making this donation, students and staff of the School of Social Work of the University conducted a survey among the flood affected victims a week after the disaster happened. Based on the survey, the team assessed that there was an acute shortage of food and this prompted us to think doing something, hence, made this donation,” said Dr Dhanuja.

She pledged the university’s continued support to the flood victims, saying they have the welfare of the people at heart more especially when a plague of this nature happens.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Chairperson of the students’ organization, Felix Yola said as students they decided to partner with members of staff as one way of showing that they are also concerned with the plight of flood victims.

“Apart from engaging in academics, students also need to seize an opportunity of doing charity work, “said Yola.

Councillor of Nkungulu Ward, Farook Hanifu, commended staff and students of the university, saying the items will go along way of alleviating the suffering of the flood victims at the camp.
