Dorothy Ngoma elected leader of Malawi nurses and midwives
Top nurse and activist Dorothy Ngoma has been elected to head the National Organization of Nurses and Midwives President (NONM) after beating three other contestants during the elections which took place at Natural Resources college in the capital city Lilongwe over the weekend.
Ngoma, a former lecturer at Kamuzu College of Nursing, got 85 votes while Abraham Gama who was leading the organisation obtained 59 votes, Griphine Chirambo receive 28 votes and Regina Mankhamba got 17 votes.
One of the contestants Ester Banda withdrew from the race which attracted 190.
In an interview with Nyasa Times, Ngoma said she has a ten point plan to implement during her tenure.
Some of the issues contained in her plan of action include development and implementation of the upgrading programme for nurse technicians and fundraise for scholarships.
Ngoma said she will ensure the establishment of wellness centre for treatment, care, and support for the nurses.
The new nurses’ leader said she was very happy to be back at NONM as a president, an organisation she was headed.
Ngoma said she will advocate for housing for iron sheets and cement project from Malawi Government in order to encourage nurses own their own houses.
The new NONM President has a big task ahead in uplifting the welfare of nurses in the country.
