DPP seeks alliance with PP, Joyce Banda excluded: Pulling a fast-one for Malawi 2019 polls

The governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is seeking an alliance with former ruling People’s Party (PP) of Joyce Banda in an effort to lock out southern region for the 2019 elections, Nyasa Times understands.

Uladi with President Mutharika at parliament: Taking PP faction to DPP

DPP director of elections Kondwani Nankhumwa has been courting fired PP acting leader Uladi Mussa to bring  on fold his support base in the former ruling party for a alliance.

Apparently, some PP member of parliament are warming up to the idea  and secretary general Ibrahim Matola is also party.

However, the alliance will exclude PP’s founder Joyce Banda.

PP spokesman Noah Chimpeni  said he could not immediately comment on the matter because he had “no idea”.

Nankhumwa also kept his comment close to the chest but hinted that in politics “there are no permanent enemies” and that “anything can happen.”

A latest report by London-based influential intelligence publication  the Africa Confidential  painted a grim picture for DPP in the run up to 2019 elections, saying its administration is riddled with widespread corruption,  nepotism and infighting.

Africa Confidential is one of the longest-established specialist publications on Africa, with a considerable reputation for being first with in-depth news and analysis on significant political, economic and security developments across the continent.

But government spokesman and Minister of Information and Communications, Nicolas Dausi,  s rejected the report  titled ‘Mutharika’s uncertain future’ as “unfair  and baseless.”
