Former minister Dr George Nga Ntafu has died in a car crash in Blantyre.

Nga Ntafu, who served as Minister of Health in the UDF administration, and was neurosurgeon and former president Bakili Muluzi’s doctor, was pronounced dead at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital where he was rushed to after the vehicle he was driving Nissan March LA 4756 collided with a Ministry of Health lorry MG 875 AC.

The accident occured at about 12pm (Tuesday) at Chatha trading centre along Chileka road in Blantyre.

Southern region police deputy publicist, Widson Nhlane Ntafu told Nyasa Times died while receiving medical assistance at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital.

”He was driving towards Chileka direction from Kameza and while at Chatha trading centre opposite Catholic church, his vehicle collided with a government vehicle which was going the opposite direction,” explained Nhlane.

The Ministry of Health lorry which swerved from its lane had passengers on board who were coming from a funeral.

According to Nhlane, it was Ntafu who surstained serious injuries during the accident while others have escaped with minor injuries.

Muluzi said he was grief stricken to learn about the tragic death of Ntafu.

The former president said he was “extremely saddened and shocked.”

“I will miss George who was my personal doctor for many years. May his soul rest in peace,” said Muluzi.

Ntafu served in Muluzi cabinet and also UDF party as treasurer general and was party leader in parliament.

Until his death, Ntafy was working as Chief Technical Advisor in the Ministry of Health.

He is survived by wife, Elvy a commissioner at the Malawi Electoral Commission, and children.
