Football Associationof Malawi (FAM) elections will take place in Central District’ of Salima on 12 December.

FAM General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said in a statement made available to Nyasa Times that the Electoral Commission, which was appointed by FAM will handle the polls.

“At its Executive Committee meeting which was held on 25th July 2015 at Sunbird Lilongwe Hotel, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) resolved that the elective Annual General Meeting shall take place on 12th December 2015 in Salima (Central Region),” Nyirenda said.

“Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission  which was appointed by FAM’s AGM of 28th February 2015 will be responsible for all tasks relating to the organization, running and supervision of the elections.”

The Electoral Commission is expected to meet on 5th September 2015 to discuss other modalities regarding the elections which will be guided by an electoral code.

It is expected that the Commission will announce when the official campaign will be opened.

Meanwhile, FAM is appealing to those aspiring to become Executive committee members to acquaint themselves with the recently adopted FAM Statutes for them to run.

In a related development former Lilongwe City Chief Executive Officer Kelvin M’mangisa has withdrawn from  the elections.

M’mangisa, who announced his bid with game changer slogan, claims that there was no level playing field for the elections favouring one candidate he did not disclose – apparently referring to incumbent president Mac Millan Walter Nyamilandu.

“I have consulted my family and they have advised not to contest because it seems the electoral process is favouring one candidate,” he said.

He was among the list of aspiring candidates administrator Owen Chomanika, marketer  Wilkins Mijiga, lawyer John Gift Mwakhwawa and former Bullets official Ali Mwachande.

Nyamilandu has struck a defiant tone that he will go ahead to seek fourth term in charge of Malawi football, saying the affiliates want him to continue being FAM president.

“I will stand. I am ready and motivated to go for another term,” declared Nyamilandu.

According to FAM legal subcommittee chairperson Jabbar Alide, candidates must have served in mainstream football administration at FAM affiliate level for five consecutive years prior to elections to stand as a requirement stipulated in FAM constitution.

Eligible voters will be 36 FAM affiliates who are; Super League of Malawi (Sulom), Southern Region Football Association (SRFA), Central Region Football Association (CRFA), Northern Region Football Association (NRFA), Beach Soccer, Womens Football Association, National Referees Association (NRA) and Youth Football Development are the affiliates that will be allowed to vote.

Sulom will have 8 votes, SRFA, CRFA and NRFA will have 6 votes each whereas the remaining votes will be given to the other affiliates.

What has Walter achieved all these years at the helm? You can not compare football with netball in Malawi. Football has achieved nothing under Nyamilandu.

The FAM executive is dissolved before elections are conducted. As such all FAM executive members will not be eligible to be elected again as they will not be coming from any affiliate. They will not have a constituency backing them.
Check this loop hole in the FAM statutes.

Constituion must provide a suscession plan. What is happening is others will stop having an interest in running FAM affairs and that will creat leadership vaccum or Gap. Atati Nyamilanduyo Ndagona pano it will take time for someone to get things right.
