Faizal Mapeto in K4bn tax bill: Malawi Revenue Authority tighten its noose

Public tax collector, Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA)  has  tighten its noose to clamp down of tax evaders with Faizal Latif Mapeto who is Chairman and CEO of Mapeto David White Head and the Ginnery Factory in Salima being pursued on the unpaid tax bill of K4 billion, Nyasa Times understands.

However, MRA sources told Nyasa Times that they are facing difficulties to deal with Mapeto who are approaching top government officials to shield them.

MRA accuses Mapeto among other charges, externalising forex to Hong Kong and under declaring the values of their goods.

In a mafia-like operation, the auditing department of MRA at Msonkho House along Independence Drive was hit by thugs where they went away with computers containing final report about over K50 billion tax evasion scam.

The Authority has been probing three Malawians of Asian origin for allegedly evading tax amounting to over K50 billion including Mapeto.

When called to find out more on the matter, MRA Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, Steve Kapoloma could neither deny of confirm.

Investigations are underway to get hold of behind the syndicate, according to inside sources.

Meanwhile, press reports indicate that MRA h lost a case it wanted Siku Transport to pay a tax liability of nearly K1 billion, including penalties and interest.

Siku’s position as presented before Blantyre Magistrate’s Court was that the assessment MRA conducted in September 2012 did not distinguish between exempt supplies and zero-rated supplies.

MRA please be in the know that your efforts to arrest Mapeto will not yield any results owing to the fact that Mapeto is and has been the financier of almost all ruling parties since the dawn of plural politics. Simply put, he is well connected to top notches.
Malawi will continue to reel in poverty because of its corrupt leaders

I feel sorry for MRA if they will manage to claim even a coin from this Mapeto guy. The problem being that these are the guys who are bankrolling the Trusts that belong to big people who matter in the society. The unfortunate thing that can happen is that those pursuing this matter can instead be fired for doing a good job. This is Malawi.
