The fire started at around 02:00 hours Friday and the Mzuzu fire brigade failed to contain.

It was unclear whether the students, who were sitting for end of semester exams and were expected to finish Fridayafternoon, would keep on with the exams.

Student union president Katatu Wazamazama hinted that the exams would “go on.”

Vice Chancellor Robert Ridley described the development as “sad” and “disastrous” in his address to the students immediately after the inferno.

Meanwhile, students who still have university books in their custody have been asked to return them.

A memo signed by the assistant registrar (student and academic affairs) Alfred Gunda also called on students to be on the look-out for those with intentions to go away with school property.

The Malawi Police Service has been deployed at the institution’s strategic exits to search all bags and vehicles leaving the institution.

Looking at the seriousness of the inferno , iam 100% that someone was behind this fire. Unfortunately am sure of the motive.

Am heartbroken to learn bout the fire at Mzuzu University, the library had just got a face lift too, been painted, new student lockers, shelves, brand new computers in the library…, that was like 3/4months ago. Now this…, Wow…, a very sad day indeed. Now to reconstruct, replace all that’s been lost, books, computers…, not to mention data on hard drives that will possibly never be recovered. I can’t help it but wonder where the guards were (who are stationed at the gate which is about 400meters away…, granted it doesn’t take long for fire to spread…, then our sorry… Read more »

Is our fire dept effective? If they always fail to control the fire, what’s the essence of having this dept around. Or these guys need panel beating and be fired for failing to do their job.
