What is this embarrassment of a High Commissioner babbling about?. The problem of sending relatives to Diplomatic Missions who don’t grasp issues. International trade is not about Tea and Nuts only.
Kenya is benefiting a lot than Malawi on the trade between the two countries. Services like Kenya Airways, manufactured goods from Kenya that are coming to Malawi. Malawi as usual send bulky low value unprocessed products while Kenya is sending to Malawi high value processed goods.
If this is the calibre of High Commissioners, Malawi has then its as good as not sending High Commissioners.
Does our High Commissioner in Nairobi understand international trade and Balance of Payments? Shame on us Malawians for sending such half baked Diplomats who are politically connected.
In terms of trade, we are benefiting more from Kenya because they are importing more from Malawi than we are importing from them.as they are giving us more forex than we are giving them.
We are better off importing machinery for industrial production from Kenya, if possible, than finished consumption goods..
Exactly my thoughts when I read that, It is not an issue for us to import less from Kenya we are the ones winning if anything the Kenyans should be the ones raising the concern that we have to buy more for them. The High Commissioner should be encouraging Malawians to export not import.
