First Lady urges Malawi women to imitate Jesus in loving children
First Lady Dr Gertrude Mutharika has called upon all women to live an exemplary life of Jesus Christ who showed unconditional love to all children worldwide.
The First Lady made the call on Friday in Blantyre at HHI’s Multipurpose Hall where she was attending this year’s Women’s World Day of Prayer.
Mutharika admitted that a lot of children worldwide are facing many challenges and require love and care hence the need for women to join hands and take care of them.
“Children all over the world are facing a lot of challenges in their everyday life, most of all, children with albinism whose lives are being haunted. We need to unite and end the injustice,” she said.
The First Lady also reminded the women to remember vulnerable, homeless, and destitute children in their midst when taking care of their own children.
“All these children need our care, let us clothe them, feed them and give them shelter because as Jesus said on Mathews 18 verses 5 to His disciples whilst carrying a child on his lap; ‘Whosoever receives one little child like this in my name, receives me.’
“Let us also pray for our children and teach them so they know about Jesus Christ,” added Mutharika.
She further urged the women to lead other women to become just, faithful, hardworking and loving.
“We should also be in the forefront in making sure that we are observing cleanliness in our hospitals, markets, roadside and all our surroundings for our children to grow healthy,” Mutharika said.
In her remarks, National Chairperson for Women’s World Day of Prayers, Regina Phanga called for support in cash and kind to assist them to minister to a lot of people.
Phanga said currently the women are relying on proceeds from sales of their cloth which is not enough.
“With the money we raised from last year’s prayers we managed to reach out to our friends at Zomba Maximum Prison and Zomba Central Hospital.
“We also managed to build a better house for a widow in Karonga who was living in a plastic house with her four children and two grandchildren and we are hopeful that we will finish the house this year,” said Phanga.
The Chairperson cited lack of monetary support and transportation as some of the challenges hampering their works hence the need for individuals and stakeholders to come in.
Women’s World Day of Prayers is interdenominational prayers which are observed on the first Friday of March every year. This year’s prayers were commemorated under the theme ‘Receive the children, receive me’.
