Chakwera, Alliance for Democracy (Aford) president Enoch Chihana, PP third vice-president Kamlepo Kalua and other opposition members of Parliament (MPs) were subjected to attacks by panga wielding rough necks sat Chibavi Primary School ground in the northern city.

Northern Region Police spokesman Maurice Chapola said the suspects are ; George Mwamtobe, 38, from Mwangukulu Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kilipula in Karonga; Lumbani Munthali, 29, from Matupi Village, T/A Chikulamayembe, Rumphi; Clive Nthakomwa, 52, of Malema Village, T/A Kyungu in Karonga; and, Frank Simwaka Kashololo, 30, from Kashololo Village, T/A Mwenewenya in Chitipa.

According to Chapola, Munthali and Mantombe are ticket seller in Mzuzu bus depot.

“There will be more arrests. We arrested the four separately but investigations are still going on,” said Chapola.

Meanwhile, Police also recorded statement from Mzimba West MP (PP) Harry Mkandawire on what he observed at the rally.

Mkandawire was forewarned by former PP regional chair Christopher Mzomera Ngwira not attend the rally because there was going to be violence.

Ngwira is said to have organised the panga wielding thugs with funding from governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Police are yet to question Ngwira.

The opposition alleged that the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had a hand in the violence but the DPP has denied responsibility.

Human rights organisations called upon the Police to bring the perpetrators “including their masters” to justice.

Malawi Law Society is on record condemning political violence saying it “breeds political instability and this in turn affects a number of developmental issues, including investor confidence and respect for human rights.”

Chonde osayipitsa dzina lakuti Reverend. Mzomera is a ploygamist and I doubt if he can preach in church. He is a wicked person and the fact speak for themselves. As a matter of fact, he has not denied involvement and that makes us wonder why the police have not arrested him. This is all government plot.

The small hole on the dike can lead the collapsing of the whole dike. This is roman wise saying. The dike in this case is our peace we have in Malawi and the hole is violence we seeing lately. This hole is created by selfish people who just want achieve their own interests on the expense of peaceful Malawiam but they don’t know the consequences. The consequences is the collapse of peace which take years to rebuild. It is easy to set fire but put it off can be extremely difficult money or no money. What has happened is extremely dangerous… Read more »

The fact remains, where were the police at such huge rally gatherings of people? They were supposed to be there anyway but were not, why? These thugs should have been arrested on the spot by the police. Did the police run away from these panga wielding thugs? Shame. It makes a lot of sense that dpp was involved. That was mainly an mcp rally, not pp’s, so how does mzomera fit in? Only if he was sent to organize the disruption of the mcp rally by dpp. After all only kamlepo was there from pp and he is not the… Read more »

Mzomera Ngwira admitted to have warned Harry Mkandawire in an interview with one of the radio stations. In him the DPP has found a willing ally to execute their sinister plans. Look at how he has been voting in Parliament. All this violence should not surprise Malawians, it coming soon after APM re commissioned cadets at Sanjika palace and they have now started their assignments. This is also reminiscent of the UDF era . When Muluzi finally realized that he had failed to run this country his party resorted to violence in order to silence critics and divert people’s attention… Read more »
