Gerald Phiri Jnr punishes Silver as Caps win
Gerald Phiri Junior stunned fellow countrymen when scoring twice to hand Caps United fringe side a 2-0 win over Malawi giants Silver Strikers in an international friendly match played at Silver Stadium on Sunday afternoon in Lilongwe.
With another part of the squad remaining in Zimbabwe under new head coach Mark Harrison, his assistant Brenna Msiska took charge of the Caps B squad which struggled to contain the attacks of Silver.
However, captain of the day Malawian George Nyirenda organised the visitors’ defence so well he had to, in one moment, whip off the line a goal-bound shot from Peter Wadabwa.
As Silver entertained fans with sweet passing moves, Caps stuck to their disciplined counterattacking play that yielded dividends.
Against the run of play, a long ball found Phiri in the channels to break clear and blast his rising shot past Silver goalkeeper Blessings Kameza.
Caps led 1-0 at half time.
In the second half, Silver continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession, but Wadabwa headed wide when meeting a cross. Silver were to pay for their wastefulness as Phiri found a way in the Silver defence, chested the ball and sped clear over the defence to fire into the roof the of the net.
After the match Msiska was impressed by the showing of the team that included another Malawian striker Ishmael Thindwa.
