Gift Mkandawire sponsored Sulom AGM and lost VP post
Super League of Malawi (Sulom) former executive member Gift Mkandawire who lost to rank-outsider Daud Suleman on the position of Vice-President for Malawi’s top league body is reported to have sponsored the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
According to well placed sources Mkandawire forked out K2.5 million to add on Football Association of Malawi contribution of K1 million.
However, Mkandawire, one of the most active loyal servants of football during Sulom’s last regime, decided not to make public his contribution towards the costs of the AGM.
“I think Mkandawire feels betrayed because the top most positions were won by the old committee members,” said the source.
“The top officials should have made sure that all the members should retain their seats. Mkandawire lost 30 against 18 while another contestant for the position for the Vice-President Gregory Madeya got five. When contacted he confirmed of contributing towards the AGM but said he was bitter he lost.
“I cannot not say much about that but it’s a surprise and shocking to me that I have lost. The teams have spoken and I have to respect them. I wish this committee all the best but I am sure that we did a lot for Sulom to be where it is today,” he said.
In his acceptance speech re-elected Sulom President Innocent Bottoman in a mark of sympathy to Mkandawire said there was a room to bounce back for all losers.
“I would like to appeal to those who have not made it that they should not be disappointed because there is always a second chance. I lost during my first attempt but managed to win during the 2009 polls,” Bottoman said.
Sulom was re-elected with Suleman coming in for the Vice-president, Williams Banda retained his General Secretary position with Captain Thoko Chazema winning the Vice-General Secretary position unopposed.
Tiya Somba Banda retained the Treasurer position unopposed while Aggrey Khonje retained Executive members with Charled Manyungwa while Alfred Lungu, Lt Col Mwase and Godfrey Makawano are new faces into the committee.
Malawi is one but Malawians are not one.
