Cuts in fuel allocations to government officials are long over due. They are obscene allocations for such a struggling economy. We are very aware but oblivious to the truth that these officers receive their fuel allowances but go on to use fuel allocations for the general operations of their MDA’s. Wawo wamu card amakasungunula and they rarely use it for official purposes. No wonder even some, bless them for their discipline and abstinence from abuse, end up accumulating millions worth of liters of fuelfrom their allocations upon their retirement; even at the end of any given fiscal year. Good move minister. Let’s plan within our means. However, this could also be a means by the DPP-led to play political games. It appears to me that government could simply be trying to demobilize political competitors like it has happened before. Government will indeed cut fuel allowances for everyone who benefits from Account No.1 including MPs, Cabinet Ministers, leader of opposition, etc. However, like it happened in the last siting of parliament – when the proposed 50+1 amendment dominated the agenda, government may supplement fuel allowances for DPP cadres off budget. Goodall is lying, this pronouncement started a long time ago, but nothing has changed. It is a mere rhetoric. Malawi is too good at formulating policies, but completely fail to operationalize them.
