Goodall says EU should not ‘cheat’ Malawi: Stance on no  budget support ‘expected’

Finance minister Goodall Gondwe says  government is not surprised with the European Union  (EU) stance not to resume budgetary support to Malawi national budget, saying this was expected.

In an interview, Gondwe said the EU has pulled out its budgetary support from all African countries except Mozambique.

“This is their new policy so they should not cheat you that we should do this, we should do that then they will resume aid, no, they won’t,” said Gondwe.

His comments come barely days after a senior EU official from Bruseels currently visiting Malawi ruled out EU resuming budgetary support to Malawi, saying the government is yet to satisfy his organisation on some aspects.

Economists say even if the Malawi satisfies and meets all IMF conditions for the resumption of aid, it is unlikely donors would come back to support the budgetary support.

Gondwe however said the government would continue with its economic and financial reforms for the benefit of Malawians with or without donors.

He said the government is quickly and ably adjusting itself to live witrhout budgetary support and was optimistic the economy would be back on track as soon.

“They have made their decision, they will not come back but life must go on,” said Gondwe.

The donors decision to pull out budgetary support because of the infamous cashgate, among key factors, has led to the collapse of the economy and the scarcity of staple food, maize that has triggered high inflation, has pushed the cost of life tot unbearable levels.

Goodal is saying the truth and he has given us facts. He has said the EU has pulled out from all African countries with their budgetary support except Mozambique. Somebody or the EU itself should dispute what Goodal has said. Azungu nawonso zawavuta osamangonamisa wandu iyayi. Fotsekiii

Goodall’s sentiments just shows that this administration is not ready to change. They know that those in authority are home and dry and don’t even want to throw an eye on a common man in the village for fear of feeling sorry. Hash rulers! History in repeat.
