Henry Moyo flops in half marathon

Renowned athlete Henry Moyo dented his reputation as Malawi’s most decorated long distance runner after flopping in the Half Marathon held on Sunday in Malawi’s commercial capital of Blantyre.

Moyo put up a dreary performance despite opting out of a main race to contest among the veterans  when he finished third in the veteran category.

Rashid Taimu won gold with Rodwell Kamwendo coming beating Moyo when he took silver.

Moyo was left spell-bound after taking up the last podium position  in the veterans event.

In the men’s event Grevazio Mpani benefited from the absence of his rival Kephas Kasteni to win gold with a time of 1 hour 7 minutes, Ndacha Happy Mcherenje came second in 1 hour 8 minutes beating seasoned Francis Khanje by marginally with some seconds.

In the ladies category Tereza Master puffed and huffed to beat Nalicy Chirwa to win gold with as he was trailing the Northern Region based athlete for a good part of the course.

Doris Fisha who switched from veterans event to compete in the main event finished third.

Fisha, who qualified to compete in the veterans event decided to go for the main event to stand a better chance of making the trip to Mozambique.

In the ladies veteran race Nancy Matanda beat Alice Msumba to win the race.

The gold, silver and bronze medalists in each catergory received K100,000, K50,000 and K25,000 respectively.

The race, sponsored by Malawi National Council of Sports, attracted 68 men 18 women 24 veteran men and 10 veteran women.
