Can the true president of Malawi please stand up. It seems everyone and anyone is making up laws and policies are they go along disregarding country’s constitution. This is the time when the head of state should call to order anyone who breaks the law including punishing the general for ultering nonsense to Malawians. HIV status shouldn’t be a criteria for recruitment for any job. Currently the army has an HIV problem with probably 60% of them infected with the virus. These soldiers and officers are still able to discharge their duties professionally and diligently. If we allow the general… Read more »

The arguement is baseless. Are these army officers aware that a person can have an HIV but not detectable. Whats this means that the Virus can not cause a person to get sick. In fact the person leaves a normal life. Even if the person is on ART, modern drugs are made in such a way that the person is fit and healthy and lives normal life. So this is discrimination because HIV is not an illness but just a condition. Please revisit your thinking. A person on ARV can not transmit HIV actually the Virus is suppressed completely and… Read more »

Colonel i disagree. Even if you are HIV tested at time of recruitment, it doesn’t mean that you will not acquire HIV 3 months, 6 months or a year after being recruited. You might even catch it in the DRC during UN mission in the 4th year of military service. In that case will you fire those soildiers because they are “unfit” in your opinion? I don’t think so, unless you want to be paying people for wrongful dismissal. There are plenty of HIV positive soldiers and people in general working quite well as long as they are on ARV’s… Read more »

The argument by the Malawi Police Service and MDF that an HIV positive person can not withstand the vigorous training one under go is baseless. The fact that one is HIV does not necessarily mean the person is sick hence not fit to discharge security duties. An HIV positive person can live a healthy and fit life just like any other person as long as his body immunity is good. Remember, the ministry of Health has introduced the “test and treat” policy which means those that happen to be HIV positive will be initiated on ARVs while their immunity is… Read more »

This is a question of recruitment. I think if you contract the Virus while in service there are desk jobs you can be given. The colonel is specific as to say Training. He didn’t say during employment. Remember recently some chaps collapsed and died ku Prison service training. So lets not confuse training to those currently serving. Training is intense and even some healthy individuals fail. But there are also some HIV positive people who are fit and I think it should be a physical test during recruitment. For example the army can buy treadmills and such, If one is… Read more »

What has HIV has to do with training, Does the colonel have medical evidence to prove what he is claiming? And are you insinuating that those who collapsed during training were HIV+ The arguments by this Colonel are baseless.

I feel it is necessary and that the military should continue testing people for HIV before recruiting them. The training that the recruits undergo is really intensive and sometimes even recruits suffer serious wounds during training where spilling of blood becomes part of day ,thats military training coz of the risks involved. The probability of these injuries happening is usually high and lets say if some one who is positive gets injured in a mix with negative recruits then its a problem,so the issue of injuries becomes a problem.Side effects of HIV drugs also is another problem, some one doing military training can… Read more »
