Hooded armed robbers attack Kachere Bakery

Armed robbers attacked Kachere Bakery Monday evening in the populous Ndirande township and went away with unspecified amount of money.

The incident happened around 18.30 hours when a lot of people were going about their business with others returning from work.

The operation was carried out within a short period of time and people around the bakery realized late as to what was going on after the thugs had sped away.

“Some hooded men stormed the bakery, one had a gun while the others panga knives and stood at the door. They ordered the employees in the bakery to surrender all the sales. The man with the gun shot in the air and immediately money was surrendered,” said an eye witness.

Some people who were taking beer at Tigers Club, Mbiya and Chimwemwe clubs heard the gun shot but ignored it only to realize that it was an armed robbery later.

“I heard the gun shot and dismissed it as one of those things. We jokingly said the gun shot was the coming of war following the death of president Bingu wa Mutharika,” said one imbiber at Tigers Club just about seven metres to the bakery.

Another imbiber said he suspected a calculated robbery which involved insiders because the bakery was not closed after five contrary to the normal schedule.

“They usually close around 5pm but see the time of the robbery is around 18.30 hours. The robbers knew that sales from Saturday to Sunday and even today were not banked. Today, the owner, Mr.
Robin Alufandika, did not come to collect the sales. I suspect an insider is involved in the operation. These are millions of Kwacha because the whole Ndirande township depends on this bakery for bread,” said the imbiber who resides in the township.

The matter was reported to Ndirande police and investigations are underway according to one officer.
