President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has said his second and mandatory final term in office is unstoppable  and urged opposition parties to accept defeat in the May 21 disputed presidential elections, saying they should get used to his presidency.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera and UTM Party president Saulos Chilima, who is also the country’s immediate past vice-president, are challenging the May 21 presidential election results that were marred by use of Tippex by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) in altering figures on results sheets.

The two filed a case against MEC in court, and the court has since included President Mutharika as to the petition with MEC.

But speaking at St Augustine Primary School in Mangochi where he held a victory rally to thank people in the Eastern Region for voting for DPP in last month’s elections, Mutharika said the opposition, particularly MCP should stop perpetrating post-election violence, describing the development as retrogressive to the socio-economic development of the country.

“We were supposed to have a Trade Fair this week but it has been postponed because six investors from China have pulled out as they are not sure of their security,” he lamented.

Mutharika pointed that, “My message to everyone is that whether you like it or not, I am your president – you just have to get used to it; In fact, I invite you all to come and join me in building this nation,”

MEC on May 27 declared Mutharika winner of the presidential race with 1 940 709 votes representing 38.57 percent followed by MCP’s Lazarus Chakwera with 1 781 740 votes representing 35.41 percent while Chilima finished third and ahead of four other aspirants hopefuls with 1 018 369 votes representing 20.24 percent.

  1. Should this fraud (altering results) be allowed to stand, it is setting a very dangerous precedent. Thus, it is my hope that the court will send a very strong message that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated. Which in my opinion should include punitive damages to include cost of a new election (as this was a very willful act)

    A court will not accept any changes to a will that has already been executed. You may not alter your pay cheque and try to cash in more than the original amount. It is unacceptable to alter examination results, why should a presidential election be any different.

    What I am trying to say is that no, you will not be president until 2024. And by the way, 38% even after cheating is still not a passing grade!

  5. The Trade fair can take place at later date. However note that dignitaries are not sure you as president cannot guarantee their safe stay in Malawi. So to speak, an international vote of no confidence from Malawi’s international partners. You are as much to blame for accepting heavily tippex ed changes on voter tallies. You can bring confidence and assurance. of your leadership by rising above the controversial elections results, simply by calling for new elections. You will still be president by default. If you can not declare new elections, please blame yourself for the failure of the Trade Fair.

  10. The issue is in court and wina kumati mufune musafune ndine president wanu mpaka 2024. He is pre empting the court ruling to be in his favour. Uku sikulakwira malamulo a court? Kapena chilipo chikumulimbitsa mtima kuti akhalabe pampandopo. Could it be that, the judges have been give BIG yellow bans and have assured him that victory is his. i pray that justice should be up held.

  14. No problem, but we need to conclude first if use of tipex in an election is constitutional and am optimistic that our courts will make a reasonable determination.

I hope my fellow Malawian realise that the longer this instability drags on, the less likely that foreign direct investment will head our way. I did not vote for you but still, I wish you all the best. for the sake our our beautiful but miserable country.

Which foreign investment do you think , the government is full of a bunch of under qualified thieves and every single members of the international community knows this. You have sensed something a normal person who is a leader and lawyer can not say I am the president like it or not get used to it that means you fear something that is coming ahead of you shortly and Malawians from walks of life will celebrate not Mangochi and Blantyre only but country wide.   25. Politics is about sharing ideas but in Malawi adopting opposition’s ideal is seen as weakness. Malawi is far from development; poor roads, poor internet connection, low wages, power outage, corrupt civil servants etc elections can never be fair in this environment until some factors are rectified not tippexed as the media portrays in news and sham documentaries.FEDERALISM is only option as no governor can betray his own state. Southern region is full of good roads, mtukula pakhomo, mabwanso a makampani ndi akonko (check who is who in these statutory corporations MDs, C.E.Os ,PS, Directors,Board Chairs…After reading affidavits and hearing evidence from various witnesses the five judges will go by the lake side perhaps in Nkhata-Bay to discuss the outcome of the case of Opposition vs MEC. From the previous tenure of DPP we have seen justice being raped in the street broad day with lawyers and police cheering the same (poetic offcourse) i.e. Cashgate, tractor-gate, maize-gate, scholarship-gate, procure-gate, Intern-gate, albino-gate, appointment gate and now I think we have POLL-GATE. In Real Democracy the power lies in the people and their will is never marginalized. We are all Malawians and we all deserve to enjoy the wealth and prosperity of our land.   29. The message is loud and clear. Let’s accept it. The opposition lawyers are looking for rigging evidence now when the case is already in court. They want MEC to give them documents. Why did you go to court when you didn’t have evidence in the first place?

    3. In court, there is exchange of documents pertaining to the case. Others make an application for the discovery of such documents. It is normal in court process.

    6. Patrick you sound very uneducated. Let me teach you a little. This is called “discovery”. Even though MCP and UTM may have evidence, only MEC has the official documents. This is why the Court must order MEC to produce these documents otherwise all that will be available are the unofficial versions.

  31. Democracy dictates that Majority Leads BUT in Malawi is the other way round. In Nigeria, they had elections in February & opposition Parties cried foul that there was rigging of the worst scale. Observers said that the opposition were crying Wolf & now the EU has come up with a final report which has vindicated the opposition by saying that the elections were rigged in favour of the incumbent Buhari. In Africa people are stuck with the governments or leaders who were imposed by few greedy individuals like Jane Ansah.

  35. I think this madala is indeed mad. He thinks judges will favor him. This is non starter and this man is not democratic at all. Leave the courts decide we all know that Jane Ansah sold the presidency but the courts wont sell the presidency like wise no no no these elections will be annulled and believe me or not. If MEC is changing figures on website that is dangerous if paid controlling officers in millions then dpp will full up prisons. Peter Muthalika did not and can win any elections. Malawi Constitutional court is non appealable Muthalika must fall.

    You have given them another 10billion already for them to share 2billion each as you did with Jane Ansar and MEC.

    The only solution now is to have sharing government but not you as individual Peter to ruin Malawian again.
