I’m not tainted with Cashgate, Kamlepo seeks apology from Minister Nankhumwa

Rumphi east MP Kamlepo Kalua has asked Local Government minister Kondwani Nankhumwa to apologise to him for allegedly linking him to the infamous cashgate.

Kalua: My hands are clean from cashgate
Kalua: My hands are clean from cashgate

Kalua had stood up on a point of order on Tuesday to challenge Nankhumwa why he kept on saying that the government could not go ahead with some projects due to cashgate, the plunder of public resources.

The Rumphi East outspoken MP Kalua said cashgate happened two years ago and it was surprising that government keep on referring to it.

But Nankhumwa said there was no problem with the government referring the matter prompting Kalua to seek an apology, saying he has never been involved in any cashgate related matters.

“That time I was not a cabinet minister, I was not even a member of parliament,” said Kalua.

However, deputy speaker Esther Mcheka Chilenje intervened and Nankhumwa did not apologise.

Meanwhile, officials from the office of the director of declaration of assets will be meeting members of parliament from Wednesday.

According to communication from the office of the speaker, the officials will first start with an orientation meeting then meet each member to help them fill and complete forms of the declaration of assets.

Members of parliament are supposed to update the office of the director of declaration of assets every year.

@simulemba, while malawi does not nearly even export enough, you must refrain from talking about malawi in light of countries like Tanzania and Kenya. If you take malawi and tanzania for example, you are comparing a country that has a GDP of 4 billion dollars, against a country that has a GDP that is close to 50 billion dollars (49.14 billion as of 2014). We seem to think all African countries are in the same boat. We are most certainly not.
