Jappie grumpy as PP defeats DPP in Mzuzu mayoral polls: Mkandawire retains Mzuzu Mayorship

The erstwhle ruling People`s Party (PP) candidate Councilor William Mkandawire retained the post of Mzuzu Mayor by trouncing governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Yona Mkandawire by 13 votes against a paltry 3.

Mayor William Mkandawire: Mzuzu City Council mayor gets new term

Sources said DPP doled out MK4 million to the 15 Mzuzu Councilors so that they vote for its candidate but it was in vain.

DPP Campaign Director Jappie Mhango unceremoniously left the Grand Palace Hotel when it dawned on him that their candidate had lost and that their cash payments did not do the trick.

“We did not buy them but we have been meeting them one by one trying to persuade them to vote for a DPP candidate so that we can develop Mzuzu. As DPP we feel that the current Mayor is anti development,”  DPP Regional Governor for the North Kenneth Sanga said.

But councillors informed that Mhango was giving cash handouts so that they should vote for DPP’s Yona.

On the post of deputy Mayor Alexander Mwakikunga of the Malawi Congress Party trounced former deputy Mayor Frazer Chunga (PP) and Patrick Ng`oma (PP), when he got nine votes while the PP due got two apiece.
