Banda trailed third in the May 20 tripartite elections that saw Peter Mutharika ascend to the presidency. Since she left office, she has been travelling all over the world on invitations by various international organisations giving lectures and fundraising for her charity, Joyce Banda Foundation International (JBFI).

She became president in accordance to constitutional order following the sudden death of Pres Bingu wa Mutharika of cardiac arrest in April 2012.

“I have an installment payment arrangement with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to pay duty on the said vehicles after which, title shall be transferred to the party,” she declares in her assets documents.

The declaration, made on December 30, 2014, also shows a list of houses under Banda’s ownership plus a K30, 000, 000 one at Chintheche in Nkhata Bay district – her husband Richard Banda’s home.

As at December 30, 2014, Banda had US$14 444.35 with the Bank of America, ZAR 244 644.00 in South Africa and MK2 008 002.00 with the National Bank of Malawi.

Her husband and her got loans of K100 000 000.00 each from National Bank, she further declares. She has a balance of 87 000 000.00 while her husband Richard is yet to pay back K79 000 000.00.

The former president also declares that she fundraises a great deal, locally and internationally, for JBFI.

“I and Joyce Banda Foundation International received donations in both cash and materials from friends, well-wishers and international organizations for me and Joyce Banda Foundation…” reads part of her declaration.

The same yardstick should apply to both Banda and Muluzi, no selective justice here.
