The Minister is in New York accompanying President Peter Mutharika, who is attending the 69th session of the United Nations.

The first meeting Kaliati attended was with Mrs. Mary Singletary, the president of the National Council of Women of the United States. During their discussions, Singletary briefed the Honorable Minister of the work her organization undertakes in Malawi.

She also informed the Minister of new ventures she would pursue, among them a fashion show to raise funds to help women suffering from fistula, training midwives in Malawi to repair fistula and promote the distribution of vitamil to school children.

Kaliati in the afternoon met with a group of NGOs that work with the elderly. During a lively discourse, Kaliati learned about the work of Help Age, the NGO Committee on Ageing and International Federation on Ageing.

In the evening, Kaliati attended a reception hosted by Plan Liaison Office at the United Nations. At the function, Kaliati delivered a statement articulating the path the Malawi Government is taking to end child marriage.

Kaliati continues with her engagements with briefings from three organizations.

This is rubbish meeting. Why should the whole Minister be told about what is happening on the ground of her backyard in America instead of her telling people about the suffering people are going thro back home. This is a disgrace, I tell you. How can a sensible person hear about whats happening in her country outside, its a shame. Very senseless story.
