Lack of resources stalls male circumcision in northern Malawi
Male circumcision, a campaign that government embarked about two years ago after establishing that it puts men at a lesser risk of contracting HIV, has stalled in the northern region because of lack of enough resources and well trained personnel.
Nyasa Times has established that a lot of men who would like to undergo the exercise in the region’s Rumphi and Mzimba districts are bing sent back unattended to because of the development.
“I wanted to get circumcised long time a go but it hasn’t been possible. They [hospital personnel] always send me back saying there’re no resources,” Wiseman Msowoya of T/A Chikulamayembe in Rumphi district told Nyasa Times in an interview at Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) on Friday.
MCH authorities confirmed the development Sunday that they recieve about 35 men who want to get circumcised weekly but only attend to 25 due to lack of enough resources.
The coordinator of the exercise at MCH Noel Ngalamira called on government to quickly help out on the matter.
“Government should train more personnel and provide more resources for the exercise because many people have shown interest in getting circumcised,” said Ngalamira.
