Lilongwe man chops wife’s hands, gets vigilante justice

A Lilongwe couple is admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) after the man allegedly chopped off his wife’s hand following a quarrel, provoking the wrath of the community who beat him up for the act.

Kanengo Police spokesperson Esther Mkwanda confirmed the development and identified the woman as Soflet Kagwa Falawo, 39, from Mkanda Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chimutu, Lilongwe and the man as Gilbert Falawo, 40, from Jumpha Village, in the same area.

Mkwanda said the two, who have been married for nearly 20 years, fought over eight sheaths of grass from which the wife wanted to have her share following their separation.

Claimed the police spokesperson: “The two separated two days before the incident happened on the grounds that the man suspected  his wife was going out with another man.

“The husband did not want to share the grass; hence, a quarrel ensued which resulted into the man chopping the wife’s left hand. This infuriated the community and they apprehended Falawo and beat him up severely.”

KCH deputy director (Nursing), who is also the facility’s spokesperson, Mabel Chinkhata, confirmed that the two had been admitted to the hospital, but she was yet to gather information about their condition.

Meanwhile, police have condemned the alleged act, advising that domestic gender-based differences should be referred to the police’s victim support units (VSU) for redress.
