Senior Chief Kachindamoto of Dedza says she will demote chiefs who entertain marriages by couples below the age of 18

Her initiatives coincide with Government agenda to end early marriages following the enactment of Marriage, Divorce Relations Bills which among others restrict girls marrying before reaching eighteen years.

“I have terminated 330 marriages yes of which 175, were girl -wives and 155 were boy-fathers. I wanted them to go back to school and that has worked,” said the chief.

Realising that three quarters were consented by both parents and village heads the Ngoni chief has since suspended, Village Heads Galuanenenji, Adiliyani, Kalindiza and Chatawa to serve as lesson to other village leaders who might want to follow suit.

“I don’t want youthful marriages, they must go to school, we have now set our own by laws to govern everybody within my area when it comes to marriages and will leave no sacred cow, ” she emphased.

“No child should be found loitering at home; gardening or doing any house hold chores during school time. No village head, GVH or church clergy to officiate marriage before scrutinizing the birth dates of the couple.”

Whatever the archaic laws of Malawi may say, thumbs up chief! In fact, the first 20 years of life are critical for development of values and skills for life. Even those that have attained the age of 16 or 18 should be talked into delaying marriage plans until they prepare their futures. You are my chief of the year!

My understanding is that the law can not be applied retrospectively. The chief goofed big here.
Now that the marriages have been annuled, so what? Did the chief try to understand why they married so early. Did the chief find the root causes of the eraly marriages?

Chief of the year, baasi! And Akweni Kaliati, currently the most vocal champion of girls rights in our country, must be very happy. Progressive chief indeed; and a legit candidate for promotion to Senior Chief, if she keeps this up.

This is a very good demonstration. Well done , chief. Other chiefs should take this example
and excercise this in their jurisdictions too.
