Malawi ex- first lady Shanil sworn-in as MP: ‘Looking forward to the challenge’

Former first lady Patricia Shanil Dzimbiri on Monday took an oath of office to formally assume her new political role as Member of Parliament for Balaka West after she successfully won in the May 20 Tripartite Elections as an independent candidate.

Shanil briefly told Nyasa Times correspondent after swearing-in ceremony that she will have much to offer from the back-benches and are guaranteed to quickly become valuable asset to the National Assembly.

“I have come to parliament to serve my constituency and will do that to the very best of my ability,” said Shanil, a teacher by profession.

Shanil said she was looking forward to the challenge as a legislature.

The former First Lady is known for charity work after establishing Freedom Foundation Trust.

She stays in her home village Mfulanjobvu in Balaka following the divorce while the former president Bakili Muluzi resides at his BCA Hill residence in Blantyre.

Muluzi’s son, Atupele (step son to Shanil), is also a member of parliament for Machinga North East and leader of United Democratic Front (UDF).
