Malawi First Lady grants scholarships to 20 girls: To study at Bedir

Malawi’s First Lady Getrude Mutharika through her Beautify Malawi (Beam) Trust, has awarded scholarships to 20 disadvantaged girls to continue their secondary education.

The girls will study at Bedir Girls International High School in Blantyre. Half of the girls have been offered boarding facilities while the rest will be day scholars.

Speaking during the presentation of scholarships in the commercial city of Blantyre on Sunday, Mutharika said, one of the pillars of her charity organisation, was the education of girls.

“This pillar was specifically chosen looking at the plight of girl child’s education in the country but also the role a woman plays in development of this country,” she said.

She noted that the girl child was facing different challenges both in the urban and rural settings as far as education was concerned.

Most of the girls are dropping out of school because their parents could not afford the cost of education.

Some are being forced into early marriages so that their parents and guardians are relieved from taking care of them, she explained.

Noting that educating a girl is educating the nation, the First Lady said her organisation believed that her goal of making Malawi beautiful would be easier to achieve if women and girls have an education.

“My dear young [women], consider yourselves as very special to be granted this opportunity. I will personally be checking on your progress and I do not want to be disappointed. You should be our pride as pioneers of this relationship with Bedir International School,” said the First Lady.

Mutharika handed over the young girls to the school management and also presided over the official opening of Bedir Girls High School new wing situated at Chinyonga—formerly Lady Bird High School.

May Jehovah bless the first Lady for what she is doing.

However, charity begins at home. Would you please beautify the state house. Look at the paintwork of the buildings and the environment.

I am left wondering if offering scholarships to girls is among the objects of BEAM Trust. If it is, you are doing a noble job, Madam. If not, then it tantamounts to corning the public into making donations to a trust for use other than those intended. In such situations, donors have every right to demand their donations back.
