Malawi goalkeeper legend Boniface Maganga to challenge Nyamilandu on FAM presidency

Widely regarded as one of the best goal keeper in the country, Boniface Maganga, has announced that he intends to challenge Mac Millan Walter Nyimlandu in the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) presidential elections to be held on December 18.

Magaga: I will contest
Magaga: I will contest

The goalkeeper legend said he will run a campaign for change, focusing on improving the management of football, saying “there are so many things that are going wrong” under the current Nyamilandu reign.

Maganga is credited for being at the hub of Malawi’s historic back-to-back East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup championship in 1978 and the following year.

“ I am certainly standing for FAM presidency,” said Maganga who also served as Judo Association of Malawi vice-president.

Nyamilandu, who is seeking a fourth term, remains the firm favourite for the role as he has backing from the affiliates who are the voters. He however faces resistance from the football fraternity not to elongate his stay at FAM and allow new brooms.

He now faces competition from one of the finest goalkeepers to emerge on the domestic scene, Maganga and Chikwawa United chairperson Owen Chomanika.

Former footballers and administrators Henry Kaka Chibowa and Alick Tahuna have only been approached to stand.

Candidates are required to serve mainstream football in any capacity for at least five years going into an election.

ITS GUD TO HEAR PEOPLE WANT NEW BLOOD AT FAM, WHICH IS TRUE I BELIEVE THERE IS ALOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO CAN DO A BETA JOB BUT HISTORY SHOWS MALAWIANS CHOOSE THROUGH EMOTIONS AND NOT BRAINS LIKE A BUNCH OF KIDS. SO PEOPLE LETS GROW UP AND MAKE INTERLLIGENT CHOICES FOR THE SAKE OF PROGRESS IN OUR COUNTRY. THAT POSITION NOW NEEDS SOMEONE VERY SPECIAL – INTELLIGENT, EDUCATED, EXPERIENCED, STRONG WILL AND “YOUNG”. HISTORY HAS OSO SHOWN US THAT THESE OLD GUYS ONLY WANTS HIGH OFFICES FOR SELF ENRICHMENTS BASI. SO ONLY TIME WILL TELL HOW SMART OR… Read more »

Much as I do not support the idea of Walter standing again, I don’t think maganga is anywhere near to being a right candidate. Yes the guy (maganga) played football in the past and loves football but that cannot make him a good football administrator. And again marketing/selling motor vehicle parts is not enough for him to be a football administrator.

Nthawi zonse ndikangomva za Walter ndimafuna kusanza. Mkulu uy kukondera kwambiri. Amakhala ndi club imene always amayikondera. Look at the composition of FAM. It’s full of uncles, nephews, brothers, sisters of this man. Tribalism/fedalismwill take us nowhere.
