Malawi government has said President Peter Mutharika, currently in New York for UN General Assembly is in good health, dismissing an social media rumours that he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Francis Kasaila trongly dismissed the claims.

Heassured Malawians that Mutharika is enjoying good health in the United States.

This was after the social media became awash with reports that Mutharika was down with cardiac arrests and others mentioned other ailments.

However, Kasaila said Mutharika was enjoying good health ever and was fullfilling his engagements.

Rumors about Mutharika’s health are common but Kasaila who is also spokesman of the ruling Democratic  Progressive  Party ,  has described them as lies spread by opponents.

Kasaila said Mutharika was “very strong and healthy,” saying opponents  are trying to deceive Malawi and cause despondency.

This is the first time this year the government has chosen to respond to rumors.

Kasaila downplays concerns about  Mutharika’s health.

The President, who is in his late 70’s, has shown signs of age. Early this year he was caught on camera by Malawi News tripping and falling down during tree planting season.

However, the Malawi leader has been captured in New York conspicuously fit and well.Mutharika on Monday attended several functions including that of Commission for Financing Education, met Africa’s richest person Dangote and was with UN Secretary General Ban K Moon at a function.

Earlier in the day, there were social media reports that warned the opposition Malawi Congress Party cadres were creating false rumours on social media to show Mutharika as very ill.

Mutharika has in the past said there was need to regulate the social media because sometimes oit spreads false rumours thereby making Malawians panick.

If this is just a malicious lie, and it has all signs that it is, then we are taking things too far. What does one really benefit from peddling such lies about our citizen number one? In my culture, and I know it is the same in most civilized cultures, you don’t just create story about someone’s illness. It is a taboo, more so when the subject is a elderly! Let’s trust that our politicians learnt important lessons last time around about being transparent about our president. He is the president for all Malawians and someone should not withhold important… Read more »

My fellow MCP sympathisers let’s refrain from creating false stories to divert people’s attention regarding squabbles going on in our party.
I suggest we should concentrate on removing Chakwera from the top job, this guy is a waste of time.

No one accepted that late Bingu did corrupts and consequently died. They denied strongly even though Zodiak aired it. DPP does that they think hiding Malawians will help its only God who knows life of every individual and when to die. Accept when somebody is ill or what soever. Don’t accuse MCP when someone is sick then you are childish.

Malawi’s economy is very sick, courtesy of Mutharika. If the economy has to recover, this man not only has to be taken ill himself but kick the ghost.

Now i can understand the need to regulate social media.
They kill people, sicken the society and cause panic among us.

Time is now the media pay for their irresponsible conduct.

I wonder what ATI can do when people fail to report honest news.

Is lack of discipline?
