Male teachers who turn school girls into their sexual partners or wives better stop the practice as government intends to start punishing them severely.
Government says it expects teachers to be exemplary and play a fatherly role to the girls but it becomes a sad development when they decide to turn them into their wives.
The concern was expressed by the Rumphi District Education Manager (DEM) Osborne Kamisi following a case in which a teacher in the district impregnated a 14-year-old in January this year.
The teacher, currently on suspension awaiting a final decision by Ministry of Education, impregnated a standard 8 girl at Chiskemba Primary School.
Kamisi said it was sad warned that government would mete out severe punishment to teachers who disturb girls by making them their sexual partners.
“It is sad that some teachers take advantage of their positions to entice girl students into sleeping with them and then impregnate them.
“We expect teachers to be exemplary and be parents of these pupils but when they turn these young girls into their wives, it becomes a great concern,” he bemoaned.
The education manager observed that such behaviours create unfavourable learning environment and girls as mostly forced to drop out of school.
“It’s disgraceful for teachers to be showing such behaviours to pupils because their performance in class is badly affected as a result girls start shunning classes,” he said.
The teacher at Chiskemba is likely to be dismissed for his misconduct by the ministry after he already accepted responsibility of the pregnancy.
