Netball Association of Malawi ( NAM) general secretary Carol Bapu confirmed the news.

The Malawi Queens Under 21 coach, who was also Civonets tactician will be remembered for great role she played in a Malawi Queens team of the likes of Mary Waya, which finished in top five in the World.

Bapu said the country had lost an icon of netball development.

“She will greatly be remembered for being at the helm of the Malawi Queens when the team showed great improvements. It was under her time when she was a player that the Queens finished in top five in the World,” Bapu said.

“The country has lost a true friend of netball who was so passionate about the game as shown by her commitment in coaching as well as umpiring. She contributed a lot to the development of netball nationally. This is a major blow for Malawian netball.”

Bapu also said Mhone has left a big gap to fill, as she was Malawi Queens Under 21 coach, which is expected to take part in a competition in July.

Former Malawi Queens coach Griffin Saenda, who also coached Mhone described her death as shocking and untimely because she was passionate of the game.

“She was a hardworking player when l was coaching her, and always humble and jovial. We have lost a pillar in netball and a role model to youngsters,” said Saenda.

Saenda said Mhone was the right choice to unearth hidden talent in the youth basing on her role as Malawi Queens Under 21 mentor.

Kukoma Diamonds captain Carol Ngwira also mourned Mhone describing her as one of the best coaches.

“She coached me at Malawi Queens and l can tell the nation that we have lost a talented coach who was always willing to teach us netball and behavior at the same time,” said Ngwira, who is also Malawi Queens captain.

Ngwira also saluted the late Mhone for being in forefront encouraging her to work hard in netball.

“When l came to Blantyre for the first time from Lilongwe it was Mhone who raised me at her house for months before joining Admarc Tigresses then now Tigresses,” said Ngwira.

Thunders Queens captain Joana Kachilika also hailed Mhone as a humble coach, who was available for advise to her players anytime.

Burial arrangements were yet to be communicated.
