Malawi paramount chiefs asks govt no to extradite Bushiri to South Africa

Two senior chiefs have asked Malawi government not to extradite Prophet Shepherd Bushiri to South Africa.

Paramount Chief Kyungu (C) flanked by Kilupula and Mwirang’ombe.

This follows a letter by the South African government asking the government of Malawi to extradite Prophet Bushiri and his wife Mary.

In an interview, Paramount Chief Kyungu said that there is no need for the Bushiris to be extradited.

He said Malawi government is obliged to protect its own citizens.

“It is the responsibility of the Malawi government to protect its citizens, in our understanding he is innocent…as far as I am concerned prophet Bushiri is the son of Malawi, he is innocent, he has the right to be protected by his government, and he has not wronged us,” said Paramount Chief.

On his part, Senior Chief Lukwa of Kasungu has also weighed in.

He says Malawi and South African governments before making any decision should consider safety and life of prophet Bushiri.

Lukwa said there are claims that the life of prophet Bushiri has been under threat.

He said there is no need to send the Bushiris to South Africa when it is an open secret that his life is endangered.

“We as Chewas believe that if a child has run away from the bush and seeks refuge in a house, we don’t send that child back to the bush, no,” said the senior chief.

Government of Malawi is on record as saying it will follow the law and procedure in addressing the whole fiasco.

Information Minister and Government spokesperson, Gospel Kazako, confirmed receiving a formal request from the South African government for the Bushiris’ extradition and that  Attorney-General is preparing “to proceed for the signature of the minister of homeland security in Malawi.”

He said : “ Once it is signed, it will be submitted to court for issuance of warrants of arrest by the court.”

Kazako said: “It will depend when the minister signs and when the courts will act on the request from the attorney-general.”

The Bushiris are expected to appear in the Lilongwe High Court on Monday, in a matter in which the State filed an appeal against the unconditional release of the charismatic preacher and his wife.

Lilongwe Magistrate Viva Nyimba had ruled that the couple’s arrest in Malawi was illegal as there was no arrest warrant issued by the Malawian authorities. The magistrate ordered their unconditional release.

The couple fled South Africa after being released on bail early last month.

The Bushiris and their co-accused are facing charges charges of theft, money laundering and fraud relating to an investment scheme.

  1. Greedy chiefs what do you about international relations, let the government to deal with big time criminals. U go mind adzukulu mmidzimo.

  2. Dzulo ku Joni apereka bail kwa wa police ndi mkazi wake. Analandira R50,000 from Bushiri account. Anaitumiza ku account ya mwana amene anagwirirdwa ndi Bushiri. Ndalama zitangolowa mwana uja anasintha nkhani kuti sanagwirirdwe anamuchinda zogwirizana

  3. All the chiefs ankadya za DPP ali mmaluzi masiku ano akufuna adye za Bushiri. Kuonetsa uchitsiru wao onse. How can a whole chief talk this shut asking govt to break laws? Zogwiriridwa ana sizikukukhuzani olo!

  4. Are the two guys saying any Malawian born person who commits crimes in other countries should be protected by Givernment? Thing have changed since old times, your statement only should civic education is required for all our leaders at grassroot levels. South Africans were robbed of their money and we cannot be supporting that behaviours. He should be deported

  5. Bushiri seems to be a master manipulator and a very successful one for that matter. After psychological and financially swindling and ruining many innocent believers in RSA, he is now manipulating our gullible chiefs, other pliable church leaders and the general public, to do his bidding. Do these chiefs and other zealouts understand the principle of the rule of law, let alone the intricacies of international law? Bushiri is a fugitive from justice who regrettably bribed his way out of RSA (yet another serious criminal case against him). And yet chiefs still ignorantly claim he is innocent! Bushiri has serious CASES to answer. He is just buying time but the inevitable (jail time) will happen sooner or later.

    1. Your wishes will never happen…you dont know how true are stories emerging from south africa. The chiefs have a point even though they dont know law. You should know that the legal framework are derived from the wishes of the people and the chiefs were just expressing their wish, they are not rubbing off the laws. You profit nothing when you are aiding your enemies to catch your fellow malawian. This is why America has tried it’s best not to handover Bush to ICC for Iraq issues. Osamagona these days

  6. I thought wisdom comes with age? What a disappointment. One paramount Chief says we should refuse to extradite Bushiri to RSA and some Senior Chiefs, Lukwa included, agree.
It could happen that a week later a South African national commits a henious crime here in Malawi and by some unexplained means flees to his homeland. Are we going to ask Ramaphosa to send us back the fugitive? Is this how you advise your subjects? Don’t mess with legal issues you know nothing about, please.

  7. We don’t need chiefs in this country. They are just idiots. We care about them. We are a nation of laws. If the government feels bushiri must go…. He must go. The chiefs have nothing to do with this. If we are to vote on whether cheifs are needed or not….. We will be done with chiefs.

    1. I am of the same view that we don’t need Chiefs but not for those reasons. I think we need to build modern communities that can help people to flourish in this day in age using modern farming methods, education, and innovation. Our chiefs cling to ancient values that are no longer useful in these modern times.

  8. These old madalas should just relax and tell their great grand kids some old tales to entertain and laugh with them and its also good for their health to engage their grand children, not to interfare on issues of governance and legal processes, thats not their area of expertise

  9. Kodi mafumu mumawasekelera chifukwa chain???? TA Kuntaja of Blantyre anapha munthu kumumanga nkumutulutsa. Pano adakali mfumu munthu okupha ngati uyu. Zinaso ndi izi. AMalawi tidzakutoperani mafumu tsiku lina. Titha kukhala popanda inuyo

  10. The very same idiot chiefs who have terrorised the country for decades in pursuit of money. It is clear they have solicited money from Bushiri to speak for him. If Bushiri was a patriotic Malawian, he would have at least investment and created jobs in the country with all the money he has been playing with. Malawi should not just be a hiding place when we are in trouble. He should go back and prove his innocence there.

  11. The same chiefs were demanding that south Africa repatriate Chathunya, today is payback time. Law must be respected. His life will be the responsibility of the south African government at the time he will be there.

    1. Chanthunya is a Malawian who murdered our sister from Zimbabwe gruesomely so we wanted to discipline him. After all he was not under any threat in Malawi, why was he hiding in RSA?

  12. Kyungu is very controversial. The more you do this the more people will get frustrated with chiefs. Why should Bushiri be spared? Because he has money? If he is innocent as Kyungu says, why did run away? Just do your ufumu business and leave the Bushiri issue to government and legal and experts

  13. It is obvious that stupidity germinates from the north and spread to the rest of the country, these chiefs are part of the reason why Malawi is still languishing in poverty, how can the chiefs say Bushiri is innocent, really? how about those families he swindled their money? Mafumu pilizi siyani uchitsiruwu, uyutu Bushiti yu adaupala moto yekha musiyeni apse cha nzeru chomwe mukadachita mmene adabwera kudzakupatsani ndalama ndikumulangiza kuti abweze ndalama zonse adawabera anthuwo ambirinso n’kukhala ma membala ake, munthu onyansa mtima uyu!

  14. Kyungu and Lukwa are always in the news for the wrong reasons! Kuteleku kasambara wakunyotsolelani ndalama watenga kwa Bushiri! Idiots

  15. The chiefs aren’t talking to the policymakers. No these traditional leaders are talking to Bushiri and after this noise the prophet will loosen the purse. These are the chiefs whose souls are not in their words it’s Bushiri’s money they are itching to pick up into their poctets. The most corrupted traditional gangsters they’re using this issue to bait Bushiri. He will fund their mouthing to the reporters. Now here they are making inroads into the public view since June 23 2020. Traditional brigands are on the podiums listen to their crap. We’ve been missing them

  16. Mafumu ake ndi amodzimodzi omwewo. Kulibe zochita kumudzi of? AIP bwanji? Tadzikalongosolani zimenezo fotseki

  17. Lol yah neh, now the Police official he bribed has been arrested, I wonder how many people benefitted from bushiri scam,

  18. The Malawi government will follow the rule of law. Chiefs or whoever cannot be the Judge and the Jury, please let justice prevail……. so Chiefs, Clergy and anyone who wants to circumvent the law please stay in your lane

  19. Ndapota nanu mafumu musalowelere nkhani za makhothi, mwachepa muvulala. With or without protection, NO one is above the law, not even someone who proclaimed himself a prophet. Anakaziputa, kuno ku Malawi kulibe malo omanga tchalitchi onga lomwe anamanga ku Joni’lo? Ndi izotu, akulau adati kwanu n’kwanu mthengo mudalaka njoka.Pano prophete ali maso thwani-thwani.

  20. This is the conman’s strategy. He has bribed the same selfish chiefs who sided with corrupt DPP Government. The chiefs of injustice who bend low to any bait of money. Shame on them. Let Bushiri go and face justice.

  21. Did I read the exampke of a child running from a bush to a house correctly? A house is a natural environment to any one even a child so what would a child be doing in a bush? Ma fumu a ku Malawi amenewo.

  22. Kyungu ndi Lukwa ndi mafumu ena opusa ndi amene Boma limawagwiritsa ntchito likafuna mupanga zinthu zopusa. Mafumu ochitisa manyazi

  23. This is the problem with our useless leaders in our continent they want to be part of the free world when it’s convenient for them.

This problem is across our continent even my country did wrong when it had to arrest President Bashir they played delaying tactics with courts and allowed him to leave.

I know there was a rumour about South African soldiers being surrounded up north to ensure he was released.

  24. Mbuzi nanunso timafumu. What do you know about this conman, kapena wakudyetsani zingati? Let him go back and face justice together with his wicked wife.

  25. Let’s hope wina sanadyepo Banzi apa.. All n all, Malawi government has the responsibility of protecting it’s citizens hence I have loved what our chiefs are saying

  26. si za ndaletu izi .ndi kukjoti osati za mafumu mbuli za mafumu a ku Mw.
pitalatu kulibe amakupatsani ndalama mukakamuuza mabodza.
khalani busy ndi citukuko ca mmidzi ndi anthu anu. izi zisiyeni

  27. Assuming that you are in cell and told that by 9.00 am you will be killed, what can you do. An opportunity rises to escape death can you not move away despite laws by other Countries. One thing many Malawians do not know is that South Africa as a Country does not comply to any SADC regulations and believe you me what they do is contrary. As much as the President will not talk anything which is good, could there be any way to invite any Sadc leader to come to Malawi for talks. South Africa looks Malawi in a small bottle of fanta. Just recently they did not capture that President who was on the list of wanted because they feared that Country. Killing in South Africa is just part of the day and they are good dancers with golden voices BUT they really dont know GOD. What Chief Lukwa said is very correct. We know what Bushiri has done to us (damage) before he left for South Africa but we cannot push them to the mouth of Lions. Many South Africans including Judiciary say Malawians are not educated with all insults but we only watch them and do not report the matter to SADC.

    1. Could you tell us what those SADC rules are that SA isn’t abiding by? Ask Zimbabweans what they think of SADC.

On Pres Bashir those in power played the game and played delaying tactics by the time the matter went to court he had been in the skies. Not that SA feared Sudan, why would SA fear a country that’s miles and miles away from it?

You need to read more to be informed. Rumour has it that the 800 odd SA soldiers part of the peace keeping mission of the UN and AU mission were surrounded to ensure Pres Bashir’s exit from SA.

Where are you getting your nonsense from that our Judiciary has made pronouncements about education levels of Malawians?

      1. You mean that books are not being red? Very surely you just dont know some rules governed by Sadc leaders. We talk what we read and hear their stories and we are not dull.We have once lived with them than YOU.

        1. Please read with comprehension.

Daaaah I don’t know that’s why I asked you to detail them to me. Please inform me.

Stop making a fool of yourself, you don’t know me nor know my movements to say I don’t move around the continent.

    1. Bushiris, Viva Nyimba, Kyungu ,Kilupula, Mwirang’ombe? where are they from? Malawian senior chiefs saying and i qoute “in our understanding….he’s innocent…..and he has not wronged us” Oh my foot! Unfortunately I always expect wisdom from our chiefs……
