Malawi players beaten at night club, arrested

Flames upcoming star Schumacher Kuwali, goalkeeper Simplex Nthala, Lemani Nthala and Harvey Nkacha were on Tuesday night beaten up and thereafter arrested at Mimosa Bar located at game premises in Lilongwe.

A video clip circulating on social media shows the players in police custody in torn clothes after the scuffle.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula confirmed in an interview with Nyasa Times on Thursday.

According to one of the players, it all started when they saw Kuwali being beaten by security officers-bouncers at the bar.

“We were attacked as we were trying to find out what happened to Kuwali who was being beaten by security men and they turned to us,”said the source.

The player said they tried to plead with the security officers to leave Kuwali but to no avail.

This is when the owner of the pub made a phone call to Lilongwe Policeand he later sent his minibus which returned with more than ten police officers.

The police descended on Kuwali and this is when the rest of the players intervened and tried to explain to them that he is a fellow police officer but the police officers gave them a deaf ear and pounced on all of them before arresting them.

He said Kuwali spent a night at Lilongwe Police while Nkacha and the Nthala brothers were released after Malawi Defence Force officials visited the station the same night.

“They are now out on police bail,” Dandaula said.

Kuwali confessed that he had beaten a guy collecting bottles at the bar after some misunderstanding.

How could a flames player drink beer and expect to perform well in the near future ? There is no discipline amongst Malawian footballers that’s why they can’t perform well. It’s better to loose with disciplined team than to win with indiscipline bunch of alcoholics ….
