Malawi players Chawanangwa, Banda sign for Mozambican clubs

Silver Strikers enterprising forwards Chawanangwa Kawonga and Frank Banda have sealed a move to launch their professional career at Mozambican top club Costal de Songo.

Banda and Kawonga have both been offered one-year contract the club.

Kawonga disclosed that the package offered to them was better than that at Silver Strikers.

“We have been offered one–year contracts and we are happy because the package and benefits are better than at any club in Malawi,” Kawonga said.

The Under-20 national football team star said they were also motivated by the fact they could use it as a springboard to secure lucrative deals.

“I am also optimistic that playing here in Mozambique could land me better deals somewhere in South Africa or in Europe,” he said.

Silver Strikers General Secretary Mike Tembo confirmed the development saying both players had been pegged at a transfer fee of K3 million each.

Tembo bemoaned the lower price attributing it to the fact that both players approached the team.

“I am sure that if the club had come forward we would have more bargaining power,” Tembo said.

Kawonga and Banda left for Mozambique for trails two weeks in search of greener pasture in a country which is becoming an attractive to Malawian players.

The development should be a blow to Malawi top league champions Big Bullets who were gunning for Kawanga to beef up the squad ahead of the CAF Champions League against Fomboni FC of Coromos Ireland during the weekend of February 13-15.

Some BB fans are still wallowing in past glory. This is 2015 not 2004 when you had the financial muscle to acquire any player of your choice on the local scene. No wonder you assembled a strong squad that was ready to compete with the best on the continent. Pano mudasauka kwambiri kotero kuti ndalama zogulira osewera pachilungamo mulibe. Ukatswiri umene muli nawo pano nkunamiza osewera kuti akubwera ku timu kwanuko awonjezera mwayi wokasewera kunja! Ndi kale lija! Vomelezani mmene muliri pano!
