Malawi Police arrest teacher for attempting to marry a pupil he defiled
Police at Ulongwe in Malawi’s eastern district of Balaka is keeping in custody a secondary school teacher for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old pupil he later wanted to marry.
This comes few days after Balaka Police arrested a 57 year old Mark Chafachaona on allegation that he impregnated his 15-year-old step daughter.
The suspect Ernest John Chaopsa 32 is a teacher at Mbela Community Day Secondary School.
He was arrested on allegation that that he defiled his former Standard 8 pupil last academic year before he was posted to Mbela Community Day Secondary School.
Balaka police spokesperson Joseph Sauka says the incident came to light after the suspect met the victim’s parents to propose a hand in marriage for the 15-year-old-girl.
“This surprised the parents considering that the suspect was in forefront encouraging the girl to concentrate on her studies a development that made them to take the girl to the hospital for checkup where she was found pregnant,” Sauka says.
Upon interview, Sauka says, the victim mentioned the suspect as the man responsible for the pregnancy a development that made her parents to report the matter to Ulongwe Police Unit who arrested the suspect.
Meanwhile, the suspect is still in police custody and is expected to appear before court soon where he will answer a case of defilement which is contrary to section 138(1) of the penal code which is punishable by life imprisonment.
Ernest John Chaopsa comes from Kabota village, Sub Traditional Authority Kachenga in Balaka.

Let him marry the girl to take care of the baby later on. Sogolo la mtsikana labvutapo apa and arresting or firing the teacher will just exacerbate the poverty for this girl and the unborn baby. But teachers should be disciplined to stop this kind of attitude. We send the girls to school not to be made into mothers. Castrate him pompopompo!
