Malawi Police officer jailed for losing official gun while dozing on duty
A law enforcer at Malawi police headquarters in Lilongwe has been slapped with a two and half year jail term for losing an official rifle and 15 rounds of ammunition when he was on night duty.
Magistrate Patrick Chitsunga Chirwa meted the punishment on Alex Mphatso Uledi.
Uledi was charged with negligent by a police officer after he lost the rifle and rounds of ammunition.
Uledi told magistrate Chirwa that he suspected that the rifle and rounds of ammunition were stolen from him whilst he was dozing on duty.
He said the building he was watching that night at police headquaters was insecure as it had no doors and windows.
But the magistrate said the officer was supposed to look after government property in whatever situation he was.

The magistrate should not have bought his story. He sold the gun and ammunition. There is no way a thief can steal a gun at Police headquarters. This guy lied. What is 2 1/2 years. The guy needed a minimun of 5 years.
