Malawi Police officer shoots self at roadblock

A 32 year-old police officer, who together with his workmates was manning the Mvera Road Block along the Lilongwe-Salima Road, has shot himself to death in the wee hours of Sunday, September 9.

Dowa Police Station Spokesperson Richard Kaponda disclosed that Constable Donald Vincent Phiri left his workmates at around 3 AM and went into the waiting room where he shot himself in the chest.

“He reported for duties as usual and did not complain of anything and as Police, we are puzzled with the incident since he did not even leave any suicide note,” said Kaponda.

He said police are still investigating to establish the cause leading to Phiri’s suicide.

Kaponda further said a post-mortem conducted on Phiri’s remains indicated that he died due to loss of blood.

“The left ventricle of the heart and the lung got seriously damaged leading to severe loss of blood,” said Kaponda

According to Kaponda, the departed is expected to be laid to rest on Monday or Tuesday, September 11 at his home village of Kapitaapa, T/A Mlumbe in Zomba district.
