According to Nyasa Times sources, the syndicate involves some police officers.

Dedza Police publicist Edward Kabango confirmed the development saying they opened fire because the criminals were not complying with their orders.

“It’s true that two criminals have been shot dead for trying to hijack a car,” said Kabango. “The third one was seriously wounded and has since been hospitalized.”

He said they had not yet established the criminals’ identities.

But Kabango, who said they had recovered a passport of one of three in the operation, assured the public that they would have established the identities by end of business Monday.

The publicist also brushed aside speculations that some police officers were behind the ordeal. But he said they would investigate the matter further to establish the validity of such allegations.

“Police officers have broken the law before,” he said. “And if some were involved in this syndicate, then they will be brought to book.”
