Malawi Pres.Banda creates official Facebook fan page

President Joyce Banda has finally joined millions of Facebook users with the aim of interacting with Malawians and everyone who cares about Malawi on a personal level.

Last year President Banda dismissed a fake account that was created in her name.

Government described the account as works of people aiming at tarnishing Banda’s image just days before an online reporter, Justice Mponda was arrested in relation to the account but the charges were dropped in court, which a month ago set him free.

The new Facebook page with the President’s picture on it, has so far hit 1, 176 likes while attracting various comments with some supporting it while others venting their anger on her.

“I the President of Republic of Malawi, Dr Joyce Banda , have joined the Facebook community so I can interact with you my friends and everyone who passionately cares about Malawi on how we can develop our nation to make it a better place for everyone,” reads a posting on the page.

She further urged people to like the page saying “Please like this official page and share the updates with a friend, thank you very much for your support. God bless Malawi”.

One of the people commenting on the page said: “Support or no support but JB remains our president. I wonder why we like to insult each other on public like this. Come on guys we are all Malawians we don’t need to use those words. We need to think the future of our country. Let’s hold our hands together and develop our home land. Long Live Democracy and God Bless Malawi.”

Another one said “Great move, nzeru nkupatsirana. [You] will get alot of messages. Some useful some not [and] chats also. I’ve never charted with a head of state [before]  but with this hope I will”.

Some Heads of State have used social media tools to reach-out to their supporters.

And the Malawi leader is now hitting the keyboard as a technologically savvy leader who follows social networking services and micro-blogging sites.
