Malawi President Mutharika’s Xmas message highlights on ‘renewal’: Peace and Love
President Peter Mutharika has sent his felicitations to Christian faithfuls across the country as they celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ, Friday, December 25, 2015 saying a Christmas period centred on peace and love is a fitting way for Malawians to express their virtues as per the demands of their religion.
Mutharika has urged people to use Christmas to make the ideals of peace, harmony, tolerance, love and goodwill “to all, even more, manifest in our interactions with others.”
In his Christmas message, President Mutharika said the annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ is a “most auspicious time” to dedicate to the “sacred virtues and ideals” that Jesus taught Christians.
The President highlighted the fact that as a God-fearing people, Malawians should uphold all that Jesus Christ taught when he walked on the face of the earth over 2000 years ago.
Besides being a season of joy, Christmas – Mutharika adds- is a time to reflect on one’s life.
“It is a season for celebration. Let us celebrate. It is a season of joy. Let us enjoy. But it is also a season of reflection. Reflect seriously. Every time of reflection is a time of self-renewa,” said Mutharika.
Said the President: “Dear Malawians, I hope we will use this season to renew our souls and energies as a nation, in particular as we are ending one year to begin a new year soon. It is in self-reflection that we internally grow. And it is in reflections of the past that we take the right path into the future.”
Mutharika reminded Malawians that Christmas is a religious tradition.
“It is important to celebrate, enjoy and reflect religiously as we are God-fearing Malawians. It does not help to celebrate wildly, and with over-excitement, because this will only bring accidents, misery and mourning instead of peace and joy,” he advised.
“Let us celebrate in a measured manner, because we need to live to celebrate another time. We cannot allow Christmas to lose its meaning and sense. We cannot celebrate without meaning and sense,” said Mutharika in his message.
The President said he, the First Lady and his government wishes “all Malawians a very joyful and blessed Christmas.”
In his Christmas message, Vice-President Saulos Chilima joined his boss to with all Malawians a Merry Christmas, emphasising that the festive period should be celebrated responsibly.
Chilima said he will spend Christmas day at home “with family and friends “ and will also be going to his Catholic church for a Christ Mass.

Many people would look forward to similar messages on religious holidays for Muslims and Hindus.
Religious public holidays cannot only be for Christians. If Malawi is a secular state ( that is, it has no state religion) then there should be no discrimination between religious holidays. They should all be observed by the state (declaring the days public holidays and special message from the President). Otherwise, they shouldn’t be observed by the state but by the religious groups concerned.
