Deputy Minister of Defense, Jappie Mhango, said Thursday during the send-off for the soldiers at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) that Malawi is committed to regional and global peace initiatives aimed at strengthening security worldwide.

“We have been providing our soldiers in the region and beyond to assist in providing peace.

“The country will continue to serve in DRC as part of the UN and Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Intervention Force Brigade,” he said.

He therefore advised the peacekeepers to conduct themselves well and carry out their tasks professionally in order to raise Malawi’s reputation as a sterling contributor to peace-building initiatives around Africa.

The latest contingent for DRC follows the return of a previous batch of 890 Malawian peacekeepers from that country.

This is a welcome development rather than just being idle, drinking irresponsibly and causing havoc in drinking joints.
