Malawi switch focus to Kenya: RVG says ‘very important’ friendly match
Malawi national team coach Ronny van Geneugden (RVG) says Tuesday’s international friendly match against Kenya’s Harambee Stars will help rectify mistakes that were spotted in Saturday’s 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Morocco’s Atlas Lions in Casablanca, in their second 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group B qualifier.
Geneugden said his troops are now focusing on Kenya’s friendly encounter with an aim of trying to rectify mistakes.
“This is a very important game to us as it will not only help us tune up for our upcoming qualifiers against Cameroon, but also work on the mistakes that were spotted in the Morocco game,” he said.
The Harambee Stars stunned Ghana 1-0 in an Afcon qualifier on Saturday.
Captain Limbikani Mzava also said the friendly provides the Flames an opportunity to prepare for Cameroon.
Meanwhile, back home Malawians have expressed their dissapointment on the Flames perfomance in Morocco.
Most of the supporters have vented their anger on social media accusing the players of lacking seriousness.
But the Belgian tactician said he was impressed with his charges’ performance as he credited the players for keeping “good team discipline and workload “, saying the result is not a good reflection of the match.
“We played compact [and] very strict against Morocco which is one of the best teams in the world and one of the top teams in Africa,” he said.
RVG also said the group is still open as the Flames trail leaders Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions by a point.
Cameroon came from behind to hold Comoros 1-1 also on Saturday.
Malawi are now third in four-team the group. They are tied on three points with Morocco, but the latter has a better goal difference while Comoros anchor the group with a point.

RVG Must now come up with the final team rather than always changing players. I dont see any justification in Changing the Goal keepers, the Goal keeper we have been using through out was good, SWINI was already tasted and rejected why bring him back in the Nation and put him on 1st 11.
