Malawi to deploy nutritionists to communities – official

Secretary for Department of Nutrition, Hiv and Aids Edith Nkawa said her department in collaboration with Ministry of Gender are planning to revive home craft workers to be deployed in communities across the country.

Speaking during Global Day of Action celebrations towards nutrition in Mchinji District, she said, the group is highly important and can assist people in rural areas through impartation of messages and best practises of nutrition.

“Homecraft workers are strategically right people to work and raise awareness on importance of having dietary foods, cookery and child survival messages at community level,” she said.

Nkawa: To revive homecraft workers

Nkawa said nutrition is essential in advancing development of the country therefore there is need to step up efforts to ensure plans and resources are in place in scaling up nutrition both at community and national level.

She bemoaned high levels of stunting now at 40 per cent despite making progress in reducing child malnutrition.

Nkawa observed that reviving the homecraft workers would bring at least a change in nutrition status because communities will get first hand information and change their eating habits to food diversification.
