Malawian arrested in South Africa for ‘selling’ 5 people: MPs to debate trafficking bill
A Malawian man has been arrested for human trafficking in Johannesburg, South Africa Press Agency (Sapa) reported on Friday.
He was arrested on Thursday but crime intelligence and the department of home affairs, spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi shielded the name of the suspect.
“The 38-year-old man told undercover police that he was selling four males and one female, aged between 41 and 39 years, for R500 per person,” Mulaudzi said as quoted in the SAPA report.
A transaction was made with police to buy five Malawians for R2 000. Later, the man was arrested in possession of money the police had paid him.
The investigation revealed that the man would lure Malawians to South Africa with the promise of jobs, but would sell them when they arrived.
“The five victims, who have since been taken to a place of safety, had been promised that they were going to work at a farm in North West,” said Mulaudzi.
They were meant to pay the man R1 500 a month, until such time that he would feel that enough had been paid.
“The man will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday… on charges of human trafficking and possible contravention of the Immigration Act,” he said.
A 2014 Human Trafficking report by the US State Department has warned that Malawian women will continue being trafficked across the southern Africa region unless government puts in place strong measures to combat the vice.
The report discloses that victims, which have been identified in African and European countries, are given false identities, travelling papers, and are forced into drugs and prostitution.
Minister of Home Affairs Paul said government will table the Anti-Human Trafficking Bill during the current sitting of Parliament.
Anti-human trafficking campaigner and lawyer Habiba Osman said parliamentarians should support the bill once it is bought in Parliament.
Osman said passing of the bill is crucial if Malawi is to win the battle against human trafficking.
